Hide your email address with Proton Pass Free

Create a hide-my-email alias in Proton Pass Free, check the ten-alias limit, and keep access to messages you still need.

An email alias lets you give a website a different address while receiving its messages in your existing mailbox. Proton Pass Free includes up to 10 hide-my-email aliases (opens in a new tab).

This example creates one practice alias in the web app. It does not register a website account or test email delivery.

Before you start

You need a Proton account for the Pass web app. Create a Proton Pass Free account (opens in a new tab) or sign in with your existing account. You need an unused alias slot and a mailbox selected to receive forwarded messages. This exercise does not test email delivery.

1. Open Pass and check your allowance

  1. Sign in at Proton Pass (opens in a new tab).
  2. Click Create item, then Alias. The count beside Alias shows how many of your ten slots are used.

2. Give the alias a useful name

  1. Enter a title such as Practice newsletter alias.
  2. Review the generated address and Forwards to mailbox. Keep the existing mailbox for practice.
  3. Click Show advanced options beside the address to review Prefix and Suffix. Your available choices may differ.
  4. Click Create alias.

Watch out

An alias forwards mail; it is not a separate inbox. Keep it active while a website uses it for receipts or password resets. Before disabling an old alias, change that website's contact address and check that the replacement works.

3. Use your own generated address

Open the saved alias and copy Alias address. Paste it into the email field of a service you intend to use. Read that service's terms first. Do not copy an address from a screenshot.

For accounts that need a password, create and save a unique password too. Creating an alias does not change an existing account's address automatically.

To reply to a message sent to your alias, use Reply on the forwarded message in your mailbox. Proton says the reply reaches the sender from your alias. Check your signature and quoted message history for details you do not want to share.

Starting a new conversation from an alias is a paid Proton Pass feature. It uses the alias's Contacts controls to create a forwarding address for that recipient. Follow Proton's alias instructions (opens in a new tab) for replies and new messages.

If an email does not arrive

Check the saved forwarding mailbox, its spam folder and whether the alias is active. Verify the address entered on the website. Creation alone does not prove delivery.

If the Free alias allowance fits your needs, start with Proton Pass Free (opens in a new tab) and create your own practice alias. Check the forwarding mailbox and keep an alias active while a real account still uses it.
