Find an email with Proton Mail search filters

Narrow a Proton Mail search by folder, date, sender or attachments. Use a saved practice draft and check the matching result.

Use a folder and a detail you remember to narrow a Proton Mail search. The web controls filter by date, sender, recipient and attachments.

The example looks for a fictional saved draft titled Practice attachment check. Your own search term and folder will differ.

Before you start

You need a Proton account for the Mail web app. Create a Proton Mail Free account (opens in a new tab) or sign in with your existing account. You need a message to find or a harmless saved practice draft. A new account will not already contain the example message.

1. Start with a recognizable detail

  1. Open Proton Mail (opens in a new tab).
  2. Click the search field at the top.
  3. Enter a distinctive subject word or phrase. The example uses Practice attachment check.
  4. Choose Drafts for an unsent message or Sent for mail you already sent. Use All mail for a broader search.

2. Add only the filters you know

  1. Click More search options.
  2. Use start and end dates only if you know the approximate period.
  3. Enter a sender or recipient if that helps. Leave uncertain fields empty.
  4. Tick Has attachments only if the message includes a file.
  5. Click Search.

Watch out

Each extra filter can exclude the message you want. Start with one useful phrase and the correct folder. If nothing matches, remove a date, address or attachment filter before concluding that the email is gone. A word found only in the message body will not match a standard search. In the web app, Search message content uses a local index. If you've enabled it, let indexing finish. A different browser needs its own index.

3. Check the matching message

Open a result and check its subject, recipient and file names. A matching word alone does not establish that it is the right email. For the practice example, the result should be your unsent draft.

If nothing appears

Try a shorter phrase or broader folder. Look in Spam or Trash through Other if appropriate. Proton's search guide (opens in a new tab) explains content indexing separately; this exercise does not require enabling it or clearing browser data.

If you want to practise these filters in a new mailbox, start with Proton Mail Free (opens in a new tab) and create a harmless practice draft first. To find an existing message, search the account that received or saved it.
