Make Array aggregator: combine records into one list
Regroup two records into one array in Make Free. Choose the source and fields, expand both output items, and check what remains available later.

An array is a list of values. This Make Free exercise uses Array aggregator to combine two fictional order records into one array, keeping their item names and quantities.
Before you start
You can create a Make Free account (opens in a new tab) or sign in. No other app connection is needed. Keep the practice scenario Inactive and use Run once.
1. Create the two source records
- In Scenarios, click Create scenario. Name it Array regrouping practice at the top left.
- Add JSON > Parse JSON. Leave Data structure empty and paste the sample below into JSON string.
- Save the module and scenario. For a warning that only says the output is unused, choose Save anyway.
- Click Run once, then Run anyway for that warning. Inspect the source result for two bundles.
[{"item":"Notebook","quantity":2},{"item":"Pencil","quantity":1}]
This top-level JSON array already supplies separate bundles. You do not need an Iterator for this source. A list nested inside a field is a different starting point; see the Iterator guide.
2. Choose what to keep in the list
- Close the result panel. Click the plus to the right of JSON and choose Flow Control > Array aggregator.
- Set Source Module to JSON - Parse JSON [1].
- Keep Target module set to Custom. Under Aggregated fields, select item and quantity.
- Save the module and scenario.
Watch out
Include each field the next step needs in Aggregated fields. The aggregator's output is the list you configured, so earlier source fields are not automatically available after it. Inspect the actual array before mapping it into a destination.
3. Expand both output items
- Click Run once. Handle an unused-output warning as above.
- Open the result bubble above Array aggregator.
- Under Output, expand Bundle 1, then Array. Expand items 1 and 2.
- Check that item 1 contains Notebook and quantity 2, and item 2 contains Pencil and quantity 1.
There is one output bundle containing a two-item array. A later module that expects the whole list needs the aggregator's Array token, rather than one item inside it.
If the list is empty or a field is missing
Check the source's actual bundle count. Run the source with representative data before reopening the aggregator. Confirm the selected source and Aggregated fields.
If a filter removes every record, the default setting still produces an empty array and the next module can run. To stop that route, open Array aggregator, turn on Show advanced settings and select Yes for Stop processing after an empty aggregation. Save the module and scenario.
Check the empty case in this practice scenario before connecting a real action:
- Add a filter between JSON and Array aggregator. Choose Text operators: Equal to, with 1 in the first field and 0 in the second. Keep JSON - Parse JSON [1] as the aggregator source and leave Group by empty.
- With Stop processing after an empty aggregation off, run once and inspect the aggregator: it returns an empty Array inside one output bundle. Turn the option on, save and run again. The route stops before the next module.
- Change the filter's second field to 1 and run again with the stop option still on. Expand the output array and confirm Notebook, 2 and Pencil, 1 return.
Use a spreadsheet for a one-off list. Check the Free-plan limits before scheduling this in Make.
