Restore a deleted item in Proton Pass Free
Recover an item from Proton Pass Trash, check the restored details, and see why restoring a deleted item does not undo edits.

If a saved item disappears from Proton Pass, check Trash before creating another copy. This example restores a fictional note on Free and checks that its text returns.
Before you start
To recover a missing item, sign in to the Proton account where you saved it. A new account will not contain that item. For the fictional practice exercise: Create a Proton Pass Free account (opens in a new tab) or use your existing account. Create a fictional practice note first and leave real items untouched.
1. Check the right account and search
- Open Proton Pass (opens in a new tab).
- Clear the search and open All items. A search or selected collection can hide an item that still exists.
- If it is missing, open Trash in the left sidebar.
To practise safely, create a fictional note first. Open that note, click its three-dot More options button, then Move to Trash. Leave real items untouched.
2. Restore the selected item
- Select the item in Trash. Read its title and details to check it is the right one.
- Open the item's three-dot More options menu.
- Click Restore item. Avoid Delete permanently.
Watch out
Restoring from Trash brings back a deleted item. It does not undo an edit to an item that is still present. Proton documents item history as a paid feature. This Free Trash-recovery exercise does not need an upgrade.
3. Check that recovery worked
- Open All items and search for the restored title.
- Open it and compare its fields with what you expected.
- Reload and check again. The practice note should appear in All items and no longer be in Trash.
If Trash is empty
Check the account you signed in to. The ordinary Restore item action cannot supply an item absent from Trash. Do not empty Trash while investigating a missing item.
This example restores text only. It does not change a website password or account authentication.
To rehearse with a fictional note, start with Proton Pass Free (opens in a new tab). For a real missing item, check the original account and its Trash instead. Creating another account cannot recover that item.
