Is Proton VPN Free enough? Check these limits
Check Proton VPN Free country choice, device limits and streaming support, then follow the Free signup option through the paid offer screen.

Proton VPN Free has unlimited data and allows one VPN connection at a time. Its apps automatically select your server. The plan documentation (opens in a new tab) explains which limits remain when the data allowance is unlimited.
Free is worth considering for browsing on one device when you can accept the assigned location. If you need a particular country, several simultaneous connections, or supported streaming and P2P, check whether VPN Plus is worth paying for before signing up.
Before you start
If these limits fit your task, open Proton VPN's Free page (opens in a new tab) and select Get Proton VPN free. That page links directly to a Free signup. Check the selected plan before entering account details.
This guide covers separate connections through phone and computer apps. It uses Proton's documentation and real screenshots of its public plan page. We have not measured VPN speeds or tested streaming connections.
There is a router exception. Proton's router instructions (opens in a new tab) say a compatible router counts as one Free connection even when several devices use it. The router must support OpenVPN or WireGuard as a client. This guide does not cover router setup.
1. Match the plan to your task
- Open Proton's VPN pricing page (opens in a new tab) and select Compare plans.
- Find the Proton Free column. Read Servers & locations, Streaming, P2P/BitTorrent and the device row.
- Choose the row that matters to you.
Your requirement | Proton VPN Free | VPN Plus |
|---|---|---|
No data allowance to run out of | Unlimited data | Unlimited data |
Choose a particular country | Automatic selection; changes are random | Country choice |
Connect phone and laptop together | One device at a time | Up to ten at a time |
Provider-supported streaming | Not included | Included |
P2P/BitTorrent support | Not included | Included |
The table follows Proton's plan explanation (opens in a new tab) and Free-versus-paid comparison (opens in a new tab). Check the current rows for your device before choosing. If your only goal is to hide your email address from a shop, our email-alias guide addresses that task.
2. Check what changing server means
Proton's Free server-change instructions (opens in a new tab) say the initial connection uses the fastest available free server for your location. The Free network currently covers ten countries, but you cannot select a particular one in the apps.
- If you already use the Free app, look for Change server. Proton places it under Home on Android or Countries on Windows, macOS and iPhone/iPad.
- Expect a randomly chosen replacement, rather than a list of countries to choose from.
- Wait for the displayed countdown before changing again. Proton documents a 45-second cooldown for the first change, then ten-minute intervals for additional changes.
Those controls are described from documentation, not a connected session we tested. If a specific country is essential to your task, repeated random changes are a poor substitute for a plan with country selection.
Watch out
Unlimited data does not give you country choice or several simultaneous connections. Write down the one feature you need, then check its Free column before creating an account. If that feature is missing, a free signup will not remove the limit.
3. Separate data limits from speed and streaming
Proton's bandwidth explanation (opens in a new tab) says every plan has unlimited data. It also explains that server load, distance and your original connection affect speed.
TechRadar's Free review (opens in a new tab) reports slowdowns in its own tests. We have not reproduced those results, and they do not establish a universal data threshold. Check whether the connection is usable for your normal task before committing to a subscription.
Proton's comparison FAQ (opens in a new tab) says it does not block streaming sites on Free, while supported streaming is a paid-plan feature. P2P servers are also listed for paid plans (opens in a new tab).
4. Follow the Free choice through the offer screen
- On the pricing page, find the card headed Proton Free. Check that it shows zero cost and No credit card required.
- Select Get Proton Free.
- If a paid offer appears, select Continue with Proton Free or Continue with free to keep the Free choice.
- Check the selected plan again on the next screen before entering account details. If you see a paid plan or payment request, go back and reselect Free.
We saw both continuation labels in the public offer screens. Their destinations specified the Free plan. We stopped before signup and did not create an account, enter payment details or start a trial. Offer wording can change, so follow the plan name rather than the largest button.
5. Keep the privacy claim in scope
A VPN changes the network path your traffic takes. It does not make you anonymous to a service you sign in to. Proton's threat model (opens in a new tab) also explains that cookies and browser fingerprinting can still identify users.
Choose Free when its connection limits fit your task. If they do not, compare the feature you need and the full billing terms of a paid plan, including renewal, before paying. A monthly-looking promotional price can be billed for a longer term.
If the Free option is hard to find
Return to the official pricing page, locate Proton Free and look for a Free continuation after the offer screen. For app controls that differ from the ones above, use Proton's current platform instructions rather than assuming every device has the same layout.
Free signup does not pay us a commission. We may earn one if you make a qualifying paid purchase through these links.
If Free’s connection limits cover your task, start with Proton VPN Free (opens in a new tab) and check the Free continuation on the offer screen. Compare the full billing terms before paying for a feature Free does not include.
